Start fundraising in 10 easy steps
Setting up a fundraiser for FIT is simpler than you think. Check out our handy guide of 10 easy steps to setting up your fundraiser:
- Where?
Do you need a venue for your chosen fundraiser? You might be able to use your home or garden for fundraisers like a movie night or a sports day, or you may need to book something bigger. It’s worth asking around as you might find an unexpected offer or a hidden gem. If you’re planning an activity that follows a route like a walk or run then make sure there are no upcoming plans that could cause disruption. It’s worth testing your route out to make sure it’ll be the right conditions and to see how long it takes. - When?
Now you have your location you should be able to find out availability and ensure it doesn’t clash with other important events to maximise event attendance and your fundraising total. - Set a target and budget
Setting a target gives you a goal to work towards and can inspire your supporters to be that little more generous to help you achieve it. Keeping it realistic can help with drive to hit your target, plus you can always increase it if things are going well. It’s also worth remembering you may incur some expenditure, so it’s worth thinking about how you are going to cover it. - Recruit helpers
By enlisting the help of friends, family and colleagues spreads the work load and it is a great way of spreading the word. Make a plan of everything that needs to be done and then divide the tasks up between you. - Keep it simple
Plan ahead and start fundraising early will leave you less stressed when your fundraiser actually takes place. Give yourself plenty of time to think about how you’re going to reach your target. Remember the simplest fundraising ideas are sometimes the best, no need to complicate things. - Safety first
You’ll need to consider health and safety and may need a licence if entertainment, food, drink, raffles or lotteries are involved. See our fundraising pack for further information or just drop us a message if you have any questions we can help with. - Get online
Set up a free online fundraising page with People’s Fundraising. This is the simplest way to collect your donations and sponsorship funds. It is completely secure for your supporters to donate straight into your fundraising pot. Ensure you make your page as personal as possible with details of what you are doing and you can add pictures to support your fundraising. Visit: peoplesfundraising.com/wall/fit to get started. - Make the most of Social Networking
Social media is a great way to help your fundraising. Post a message linking to your online fundraiser and ask people to donate and share your fundraiser. Make sure you post regular updates to keep people engaged and let them know the status of your target. A private message can go a long way for a more personal touch. - Gift Aid it
Gift Aid adds an extra 25% on top of your fundraising at no extra cost to you or your sponsors – amazing! However it can only be used for activities when an individual is making a direct donation or sponsoring you. If you are fundraising online your sponsors will automatically be asked about Gift Aid. If you are using a paper form, do make sure your sponsors enter their full name, home address and postcode, and tick the Gift Aid box – if they don’t we won’t be able to claim that extra special 25% from the Government. - Don’t leave home without it
Use paper sponsorship forms for your not-so PC savvy friends and make sure you always carry them with you, so people can sponsor you wherever, whenever. Try to get your most generous sponsors at the top of your form to set the trend, as this will encourage others to be more generous. our forms are available in our fundraising pack.
